The range started off as a military shooting range in the early 1950s. In those days, they used 22 caliber rifles for practice and only limited to military personnel. The Rifle Club was formed in the 1970s by RPI(Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute) and practices were held at the same shooting range using the same smallbore rifles.
However, the use of the .22 caliber rifles stopped because the risk of lead poisoning especially in an enclosed space such as the range. It was replaced with .177 air rifles in 1983 which are mostly German made. Members are trained to shoot with International or Olympic style shooting. The club has sent representatives to competitions ever since it was established. They are also held in the RPI shooting range from time to time and schedules are available on theĀ events page.
